TOWER OF COLLSEROLA

Construction of Barcelona's new Telecommunications Tower began in February 1990 and it was brought into operation in July 1992 on the occasion of Barcelona hosting the XXV Olympiad.

The promoter of the project and the current owner is Torre de Collserola S.A. (ltd.) whose shareholders are Telefonica de España S.A with 30,40%; Retevisión S.A. with 41,75%; Centre de Telecomunicacions i Tecnologies de la Informacio de la Generalitat de Catalunya with 22,85% and the Entidad Metropolitana del Transporte with 5%. It could be said that this is the result of a joint effort between the major radio communication operators of the country and the representation of local Governments.

The tower has a total height of 288 meters and it is located in the Collserola mountain range which runs parallel to the Mediterranean Sea.The location is a place known as Turo de la Vilana and is situated 445 meters above sea level. The construction rises a further 268 meters from this height.

The complex comprises the Tower and an Auxiliary building, which houses services for the installations. The Tower itself consist of three parts: a concrete shaft, just 4.5 meters; a tubular steel mast of 38 meters lenght and, bringing the Tower to its full height, a 45-metre stretch of latticed steel.

Thirteen platforms, with a total floor area of 5.500 meters have been constructed between the 84-metre and the 152-metre points of the Tower. The tenth platform has been designed as a Public Viewing Deck 560 meters above sea level, affording excellent views taking in the city and its environs, the Mediterranean Sea and the Catalan hinterland up to distances of over 70 kilometres. The viewing deck is reached from inside the mountain by means of an elevator which travels up the outside of the concrete shaft. The elevator is glazed to permit panoramic viewing, and its speed of one meter per second takes the public to the Observatory in under two minutes.

A second lift, similar to the first but without the panoramic views, is designed exclusively for access to maintenance of the telecommunications installations. In the base of the Tower, which is built into the mountain, are housed a reception area and an automatic cafeteria ,designed to make visitor's wait more agreeable.
